oh, happy day

new england, new york, and new jersey were bracing for the onslaught of snow from blizzard juno, but for many states the outcome was underwhelming to say the least. having grown up in massachusetts and living in connecticut for the past four years, i have become used to blizzards and snow storms with accumulation totals measured in feet, not inches. so i was slightly disappointed when i woke up this morning to find that the snow amounted closer to 15 inches rather than 30 but i really couldn’t complain since i had a snow day today. i also found out an hour earlier than i have a snow day tomorrow too!

typically for breakfast, i either have a breakfast sandwich or oatmeal since i can eat it on the go but i usually treat myself to pancakes or waffles when i don’t have work. today was no exception. since i made chocolate chip pancakes last saturday, i made waffles with strawberry sauce this morning.

delicious and simple to make

the recipe i use can be found here – all you need are strawberries, sugar, vanilla extract, and corn starch. easy peasy 🙂

yum!
                                                yum!

to make the pancakes or waffles a little bit sweeter and prettier for presentation, i sprinkle powdered sugar on top using a sieve and a spoon. enjoy!

i also took advantage of the extra time i had today to organize part of my side of the master closet. as my belly grows, there are more clothes that i can’t fit into anymore. going through my clothes allowed me to also put away summer and fall items that i hadn’t bothered to put away. i also have one trash bag of clothes that i am going to bring to a consignment store.

it doesn’t look like much, but organizing the four shelves took me about an hour and a half as i refolded clothes and also put many away in storage containers. i feel really liberated and know i am going to feel less anxious when figuring out what to wear in the morning. again, i only tackled part of the closet but baby steps…

speaking of baby, i am nearing seven months! accomplishing small tasks such as these makes me feel a wee bit more ready for when the baby comes.. just a little bit. now i’m off to update the registry (yet again) and spend quality time with my husband and dog.

let it snow, let it snow, let it snow

our dog is normally great about waiting to, er, shall we say, relieve herself until either dennis or i get out of bed. we know she really has to go if she jumps out of bed and starts pacing which is what she did on saturday morning. then she started hinting even more by jumping on the couch and looking out the window at the freshly fallen snow. light began flooding the room because she pushed aside the curtains and we couldn’t ignore her any longer.

catering to our dog is not much to complain about. when our baby arrives, we’ll be in a sleep-deprived state of mind most of the time so taking care of yuri is cake. we’ll just have to make sure she doesn’t get jealous of the baby :X as i type this, she is curled up on my lap…

much of connecticut received 5-8 inches of snow yesterday. dennis and i were going to visit my grandma in massachusetts because she recently had a hip surgery at 93(!), but the treacherous roads kept us at home. we enjoyed each other’s company instead by playing in the snow, dancing to bruno mars’ uptown funk in the kitchen, and eating homemade brunch together

after we ate, all three of us relaxed in the living room: dennis read a magazine and i read the newspaper in front of a blazing fireplace. we slowly drifted to sleep and fell asleep for about an hour and a half.

in the evening, we visited our friend, genie, who is about 31 weeks pregnant. her husband, ben, works for espn and is away in arizona until february 2nd to work at the superbowl. we went to her house to shovel her driveway (rather, dennis shoveled and i took yuri for a walk) before she came home from work. then we all ate individual pizzas from california pizza kitchen and watched dawn of the planet of the apes. it turned out to be an entertaining movie even without, sadly, james franco.

weekend in nyc

my friend, liz, turned 30 yesterday. in honor of her birthday, dennis and i took the train down from new haven to the city on saturday to participate in the bday festivities. we stayed at the grand hyatt hotel which is conveniently located a few buildings down from grand central station. although we are no strangers to nyc, it felt like a mini vacation treating ourselves by staying at a snazzy hotel.

the grand hyatt hotel boasts a contemporary design with minimalistic elements. we were impressed by the details and decor. the room was very comfortable which made it even more difficult to step outside into the frigid city weather. despite the cold, dennis and i walked to madison ave to do some shopping before dinner. we ended up cabbing it for the trip back to the hotel.

liz’s bday dinner was at feast which is located in east village and is owned by a friend of her family’s. our dinner party consisted of about 23 guests and we had a private room in the basement.

i love the gorgeous rustic look and the coziness of this place. feast offers an a la carte and family-style menu, but we had a prix fixe menu for the birthday celebration.

i enjoyed all of the dishes, except i couldn’t try the swordfish because of the high mercury content. the fish ended up being many guests’ favorite – go figure. dennis enjoyed my portion for me though. i particularly liked the bbq shrimp pie and the croquette.

dessert was a red velvet cake provided by andy, liz’s husband. feast provided calas, a creole dish that is traditionally served for breakfast. they are similar to doughnut holes but are more dense since rice is one of the ingredients. these are called “rice doughnuts” or “creole rice fritters”. the accompanying sauces are chocolate, quince (a type of fruit), and pistachio. i thought it tasted best sans sauce.

after dinner, we danced the night away at central bar four blocks from feast. the place got packed really quickly and the wait for coat check was a nightmare, but we still had a great time.

the next morning, dennis and i checked out of the hotel and took a cab to k-town to grab lunch and buy pastries from tous les jour before heading back home. we love korean pastries and ended up buying four bags’ worth, but we shared them with dennis’ parents and our friends, grace and ed.

i spied magnolia bakery at grand central station and bought 4 cupcakes 😀 the one with the green frosting is vanilla on vanilla and the bottom one is hummingbird, a banana pineapple spice cake. i’ve actually made hummingbird cake before and it’s delicious. carrot cake is hands-down my favorite cake, but hummingbird tastes similar to it.

we were exhausted from our short stay in new york and thankfully we both had today, martin luther king, jr day, to recuperate before heading back to work tomorrow. this morning, we went to my ob for a 24-week checkup and penelope’s heart rate is 137 bpm. she’s doing fine 🙂

dennis has been patiently waiting for me to cook dinner so i must be going. good night!

our daughter’s name will be penelope.

we had a girl and boy name picked out a few weeks into my pregnancy so it was either one or the other when we found out the gender. ^_^

I hit the 6 month mark this past Friday. ALREADY. I thought the nine months would drag but it has been flying by. with each passing day, Dennis and I experience feelings of joy and anxiousness. naturally, we are thrilled to be parents but sometimes the prospect of becoming parents terrifies us. I suppose we had a little practice raising a vociferous, energetic pomeranian mix the past four years but a human baby is a different story. never mind worrying if we’re ready because the baby is coming in three months!

image1

six months!

what’s been helpful during this time is being able to share pregnancy symptoms and my hopes and fears with other expecting moms. one of my good girlfriends is due in early april and she’s been able to give me a heads-up of what to look forward to (or not) in the coming weeks. and it’s also fun to be able to plan things like baby showers and decorating the nursery together. if you ever plan on having a child, try to find a community of moms (and even dads) to share the journey with – being able to swap stories with my friend among others has been greatly beneficial since it’s tough for the father-to-be to truly empathize with the woman’s changing body and what she’s going through no matter how supportive he is. that said, dennis has been so hands-on since day one. these past few months have given me a glimpse of the loving dad that he will be when our baby girl makes her entrance.

dennis and i had long chosen our nursery colors before we knew of the gender. i had been scouring pinterest for inspiration since the day i found out i was pregnant so i’ve had plenty of time to see what colors i wanted. i knew i wanted gray walls – a nice neutral that is modern and chic – and dennis immediately agreed. i also wanted something to make the nursery stand out and was deciding between having an accent wall via a different color or patterned wallpaper or painting stripes on the ceiling. dennis and i settled on the latter because we thought it was such a unique touch. i chose gold which dennis was hesitant about until he painted the ceiling. it is the perfect shade of gold – rich and elegant.

image4
we converted the third bedroom into the nursery. the chandelier has been there since we moved in three years ago so we kept it for the nursery, and it’ll be perfect for “princess penelope” as a former colleague put it 🙂

for those of you interested in the colors, here are the paint chips for behr: natural gray and classic gold

before i close, i would like to share one last piece of advice for future parents: remember to relax and still make time for yourselves. not only will you not have the luxury of peace and quiet once the baby arrives but being active helps keep the stress level down for the baby mama and also can help make delivery easier when the time comes. so go out there and have fun when you can… although it’s easier said than done since all i want to do nowadays is veg on the couch…

yesterday, we went to the uconn vs. cincinnati game in hartford with our friends john and alice. it was an exciting game because it was close the entire time, and uconn won their third game in a row. afterwards, we went to dave & buster’s to eat and play. sad to say, but my arms are sore from an intense sesh of a 4-way air hockey game.

here’s to 2015… and parenthood

happy new year!

i say this every year, but i can’t believe another year has come and gone. 2014 was an amazing year for me. i had thought that 2013 would be tough to beat since that was the year i got married to my best friend, dennis. little did i know 2014 had even more milestones in store for me: a new job as a kindergarten teacher and impending parenthood!

dennis and i found out the joyous news on september 4th, but it didn’t become *REAL* until we discovered the gender on Christmas morning: we are having a girl!

giphy (3)Dennis’s reaction

ah, well.. like many men, Dennis wanted a son first. After the -brief- initial disappointment, Dennis was, and still is, ecstatic. All that matters is that the baby is healthy. †

here’s what we looked like on christmas morning:

10868178_10152603484155765_4970822900762808771_n

a former colleague suggested that we have our ob place either a pink or blue pacifier in a box (depending on the gender) and not open it until christmas morning. we are so fortunate that our gender reveal appointment was only 3 days prior to christmas making the agonizing wait not as painful. my father-in-law, also wanting a girl, suggested we open gifts on christmas eve but we were insistent on waiting until christmas morning.

some of my readers may have been loyally following my now-retired tumblr blog, and i thank you for your continued support and words of encouragement… particularly when i had been overwhelmed with my job and grad school, and hadn’t had the motivation nor energy to maintain my blog in the past few months. i guess the exciting news of becoming a first-time mommy re-sparked my desire to keep a blog. that, and my love for fashion and writing needs an outlet as well.

why not continue the tumblr blog? i initially chose tumblr to showcase my style since the platform is geared towards a more youthful audience and is more visually-oriented: i let the images do the talking. i still want to share my fashion and style ideas, but now that i will become a mommy i want to share that journey as well (especially inspo on ways to still look fashionable and chic with an ever-burgeoning belly).

my blog isn’t just for current or future mommies, but for anyone that is interested in learning and sharing fashion and lifestyle ideas. i eagerly anticipate picking up great tips and ideas from my readers as well.

thank you for your support and i look forward to your feedback – please feel free to leave a comment on my posts. also, you can keep in touch and chronicle my journey on facebook and instagram as well.
